What's it all about?

The motor industry is changing. Electric and hybrid vehicles (EVs) are increasing in popularity and, with this wide adoption, standards and procedures will also change. City College Plymouth delivers this IMIAL Award in Electrically Propelled Vehicle Repair and Replacements as part of its commitment to supporting change and development within the electrical and hybrid vehicle industry. This will ensure individuals on the course are provided with the knowledge and skills they need to stay ahead. Those working with EVs will be required to maintain, repair and service vehicles to the highest possible standards – and have the correct knowledge and understanding of the issues that are emerging. What’s more, because all the IMI Awards at City College Plymouth have been developed by expert working groups from within the industry, you can be sure that the qualifications are both relevant and respected.

Course information

This award is designed for technicians who maintain and repair electric/hybrid vehicles. It contains the knowledge and skills required to work safely in and around the vehicle’s high and low voltage electrical system and electric drive train system whilst carrying out repairs or maintenance.On completion of this qualification, technicians will be able to practically demonstrate that they have the skills required for repairing vehicles with low and high voltage electric technologies.

Entry requirements are assessed on an individual basis. Selection criteria for entry will take into account each applicant’s existing academic/vocational qualifications and experience in working in the retail automotive industry.

Although not mandatory, it is recommended that you should have three GCSEs, or Scottish Standard grade/intermediate in maths, English and a science-based subject.

Qualifications are assessed through a combination of online testing plus oral and/or practical assessment(s). Assessments vary depending on the level and learning route taken.

This qualification is suited to individuals looking for a career in the automotive industry and those already employed as technicians – as well as those working in the fleet, public or emergency sectors.
