What's it all about?

This is a basic introduction to the construction industry where you will get the opportunity to sample one or more of the four trades in construction – brickwork, carpentry and joinery, painting and decorating, and plastering.

It will give you a great starting point for further in-depth skill and vocational training for the construction industry.

This course is free for 16 to 18-year-olds.

Course information

The course covers practical skills necessary for all four construction trades – each one can be sampled or just one followed. It will also help develop a basic knowledge of health and safety in the workplace, develop hand skills, tool use and working in the construction industry.

Each skill area will cover health and safety, tool safety and use, material recognition and application.

Upon successful completion you may progress on to a full-time level 1 diploma course in one of the four construction trades or gain an Apprenticeship.

Your lecturer will assess your work and you will be required to undertake an online health and safety test which will lead to the completion of the CSCS card testing required to access building sites.
