What's it all about?

This qualification has been specifically designed to develop your knowledge, understanding and skills to prepare you for employment as a junior nail technician. You will have your nail services skills assessed in a real or realistic working environment.

This qualification includes all the required elements to work effectively as a nail technician including: providing and maintaining nail enhancements, manicure treatments, health and safety and client care.

You will also develop your understanding and skills by selecting a number of optional specialist units which include: pedicure treatments and nail art. This qualification structure provides you with the flexibility to develop your knowledge, understanding and skills required depending upon your designated career pathway as a junior nail technician.

Course information

Initially, you will study an NVQ Level 2 Award in Manicure to provide you with the foundation to build upon throughout the duration of the year. You will then move onto the Level 3 Diploma element of this course which will include the following technical units: 
  • apply and maintain nail enhancements 
  • electric filing techniques 
  • nail art including embedding and 3D designs, colour blending and marbling. 
With business units of: 
  • working in beauty related industries 
  • promotion and selling 
  • client care 
  • health and safety 
  • contributing to the effective running of a business. 

There are no specific entry requirements for this course, however a positive attitude and a willingness to learn are essential for success. Achievement of a level 2 qualification in beauty will see you better prepared to undertake this programme of study but is not essential.

All work will be assessed through written assignments, online exams and practical observations.

Career opportunities exist in a variety of contexts as a junior nail technician, including:

  • commercial nail salon
  • retail concession ‘nail bar’
  • independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings.

Whilst this qualification’s primary purpose is to prepare you for employment as a junior nail technician, you may choose to develop your skills further by undertaking a range of level 2 beauty and hairdressing qualifications at the College, including:
