What's it all about?

The NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Understanding Children and Young People’s Mental Health is designed to provide you with a thorough understanding of mental health challenges that children and young people may face, the factors that can affect their wellbeing, and the strategies and interventions that can be used to support their mental health. The qualification is suited for anyone working with children, such as educators, caregivers, and social workers, or those who wish to better understand mental health in a young population.

Course information

The course covers the following topics:

  • overview of mental health and mental illness in children and young people
  • the prevalence of mental health issues in young populations
  • the importance of early identification and intervention
  • factors influencing mental health, such as genetic predisposition, environment, and life experiences
  • the effect of mental health challenges on emotional well-being, behaviour, and academic performance
  • understanding the developmental impacts: How mental health affects cognitive and social development
  • the short- and long-term consequences of untreated mental health problems
  • case studies of young people experiencing mental health difficulties
  • strategies for supporting young people with mental health issues in educational, home, and social settings
  • understanding the importance of building trust and open communication
  • introduction to therapeutic interventions, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and counselling
  • the role of schools, teachers, and caregivers in providing mental health support.

There are no specific entry requirements for this course. However, you may find it helpful if you’ve already achieved a level 1 qualification in healthcare, social care, childcare or supporting learning.

A workbook will be completed and assessed, followed by an Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) review. 

Upon successful completion, you may progress to a range of courses including the Certificate in Understanding Behaviour That Challenges and Certificate in Understanding Adverse Childhood Experiences.
