Do you want to become a professional dancer, choreographer, or dance teacher? The Extended Diploma in Dance at City College Plymouth could help you achieve just that! This exciting dance course is for passionate and ambitious students who want to make their dream dance career a reality. You’ll develop your dance skills in a wide range of styles, including ballet, jazz, tap and contemporary dancing. You will be devising your own work and performing to audiences from inside and outside of the College environment. The College’s vibrant arts, media and production department has a full programme of professionally directed events that you will also be involved in as a performer. This one to two-year course is made from bite-sized chunks that each gives you a recognised qualification. If you complete all the units of the two-year programme then you will have a qualification equivalent to three A Levels – so you can progress to a dance degree course at a number of institutions, or stay with us here at the College to study a university-level course. Alternatively, you’ll have all the confidence and skills to start seeking rewarding work in the dance industry.
You will study a range of subjects including:
- contemporary dance
- jazz dance
- tap dance
- world dance
- street dance
- being a fit and healthy performer.
Your individualised study programme will be made up of the following four areas:
- the qualification you are studying
- English and maths
- work experience
- other activities to develop your personal skills e.g. preparing you for employment, training or higher/further education.
Four to five GCSEs at grades 9-5 (A*-D) (if you do not hold an A-C or a 9-4 in maths and English then this will be studied alongside your course), although relevant experience will also be considered if you do not have these qualifications.
There are no exams. You will be continually assessed throughout each stage. This will include projects, ongoing work, practice routines, tests and evaluation. Functional skills, or GCSE English/maths, will also be assessed if appropriate.
Fees quoted apply to courses starting in the academic year 2020/21 (August 2020 – July 2021). There may be a slight increase in fees for courses starting 2021/22.
