The City & Guilds Diploma in Education and Training at City College Plymouth is an in-service route to a qualified teacher or assessor role in further education colleges, work-based learning, or community, public sector and private training. This course is ideally suited to those who want a teacher training course leading to a full teaching qualification.


You will acquire a practical teaching and training toolkit to use in your everyday professional role. You will also develop reflective and critical skills to enhance your practice and maintain your continuing professional development as a teacher in the further education and skills sector.

Course information

This Level 5 course is part-time and in-service; this means you need to be in a suitable teaching or training post to enter the course. This can include voluntary teaching.

A minimum of 100 hours’ teaching/training practice is required over the two years of the course.

You need to be suitably qualified in one or more specialist subjects or vocational areas. In most cases this will be a Level 3 or higher qualification. You must also demonstrate that you are working at Level 2 English, and good digital skills are essential in making sure you can complete the necessary assignments. It is also desirable that you have a mentor in your subject specialism to support your professional development as a teacher.

You will need to complete portfolios and assignments and be observed eight times in your teaching practice by your course tutor. You must achieve a minimum standard of teaching to pass the course.
