What's it all about?

Please note this course is free for all adults earning less than £18,525 a year, even if you already have a level 3 qualification.

Would you like to become a restaurant manager, event manager or supervisor? This City & Guilds Diploma in Supervision of Food and Beverage Service could help you develop into a supervisor or hospitality manager. The course is geared towards finding employment within the vibrant and exciting hospitality and tourism industry whilst also helping you achieve your academic objectives. It is designed for those who are looking to further their knowledge and experience of the hospitality and catering industry.

If you want to lead a team in the planning and running of events and work in a customer service based environment, then this study programme is for you! It builds on existing knowledge and skill to prepare you for a career as a supervisor or manager in hospitality and tourism related industries. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to work at external high-profile events all around Plymouth such as MTV Crashes and Flavour Fest.

Course information

The subjects you will study include:

  • supervising in food and beverage areas
  • food safety supervision
  • events
  • marketing and promotion
  • customer service activities
  • preparing, cooking and serving food in a food service area
  • alcoholic beverages.

Your individualised study programme will be made up of the following four areas:

  • the qualification you are studying
  • English and maths
  • work experience
  • other activities to develop your personal skills e.g. preparing you for employment, training or higher/further education.

In our experience in order to be successful on this course you will need one or more of the following:

  • four to five GCSEs at grade 9-4 (A*-C), including English and maths, and a level 2 diploma
  • a BTEC foundation diploma in a related subject
  • level 2 functional skills (including literacy and numeracy)
  • equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience.

To complete each subject successfully you must demonstrate your competence at meeting the learning outcomes for each unit. This will be in a number of ways and will reflect the requirements of supervising a hospitality and tourism workforce, such as:

  • portfolio of evidence
  • presentations
  • group projects
  • observations of your practical competence
  • reports and essays
  • online tests.
