Acting for Digital Media

This degree is taught by professionals, with experience in the acting industry and the digital media industry. It is delivered through strong industry level practical training, supplemented by formal teaching practices (workshops and lectures); it also provides students with real world acting experience, through their participation in directed and designed digital productions in each of the two years of the foundation degree. Thus, students benefit from a rich mix of actor-specific training with the application of skills intended for performances within digital/broadcast media, and will graduate with an intellectual and practical understanding and knowledge of the actor’s craft alongside a working CV and the tools necessary to launch an acting career with a strong knowledge base of current and emerging technologies.

Level 4 Modules

• Visual Studies – This module will look at the historical context of film and broadcast technologies and the actors’ role within their expansion.
• Acting With Digital Media – This module focuses on developing the technical and expressive skills of the working actor through specialised digital media experiences.
• Creative Voice – This module will be carried out through a series of workshops to develop the technical and artistic skills of the voice.
• Creative Body – This module will be carried out through a series of workshops to develop the technical and expressive skills of the actors’ body.
• Contextual Naturalism In Actor Training – This module will develop the actors’ expression of self through the historical study and technique-based learning of naturalistic acting styles. The module will focus on the development of individual practice and the application of appropriate skills to a performance.
• Performance Project 1 – This module will allow the students to apply training that they have undergone throughout the year for a final acting performance.

Level 5 Modules

• Research In Practice – A research project where you begin to interrogate your chosen area of study, developing your contextual knowledge and understanding
• Creative Voice 2 – The purpose of this module is to deepen, broaden and develop skills in vocal performance technique. As well as working at a higher level of technique, this module expands upon Level 4 Core Technique (Voice) by placing a strong focus on independent practice.
• Creative Body 2 – The purpose of this module is to deepen, broaden and develop skills in physical performance technique. As well as working at a higher level of technique, this module expands upon Level 4 Core Technique (Body) by placing a strong focus on independent practice.
• Performance Project 2 – This module focuses on developing a deeper understanding of the technical, creative and professional elements that are the actors’ craft.
• Professional Practice – A module that is preparing you for the professional world. Here you will begin to put content together and seek out opportunities to enable you to develop your portfolio.
• Improvisation and Storytelling – This module develops essential components of an actor’s toolkit – improvisation and storytelling. Through lectures and workshops, this course provides you with the opportunity to enhance your writing skills and understanding of storytelling. This module also explores how improvisation is used within the industry and gives you practical experience improvising in collaboration with others.

There are no exams. Assessment methods include:

Rehearsal/Studio Work
Sessions focused on the development of a specific product for performance to an audience and/or development of specific skills and techniques in practice.

Performance
A piece of creative practical work, either undertaken in groups or individually realised, enabling students to engage the actors craft through the creative processes involved in pre-recorded performance.

Logbook
A descriptive account of the work undertaken usually accompanying a Practical Project, which includes personal and group reflection. It will involve explanation and interpretation of processes and practices under consideration.

Research Project
Detailed individual research or a sustained practical project, which is contextually grounded. All independent projects are negotiated with and supervised by an appropriate tutor.

Seminar
Presentation of experience, knowledge and skills to peer group to evidence understanding and knowledge.

Vlog
Recorded media for the web in the style of an opinion diary. Used most often to record daily learning and to capture informal commentary.

Interview/Presentation
Presentation of specific material in a mock professional situation.
