Are you thinking about becoming a hairdresser, stylist, beautician, or beauty therapist? This level 1 VRQ City & Guilds qualification at City College Plymouth will give you an in-depth introduction to the hair and beauty sector. You’ll learn hair and beauty skills such as styling women’s hair, applying basic make-up, nail art, skin care and the art of dressing hair. This course provides a fun and inspirational insight into the industry and will build on your existing skills to allow you to progress to the next level. You will also be able to learn some level 2 skills in preparation for progression and employment. After you complete the course you could progress to an Apprenticeship or a full-time level 3 course in either hairdressing or beauty therapy.
You will learn a range of different units depending on what interests you the most, hair, beauty or a bit of both. A taste of the units you could be studying are:
- introduction to the hair and beauty sector
- presenting a professional image
- styling women’s hair
- basic make-up
- basic skincare
- themed face painting
- nail art
- working with others
- creating an image based on a theme
- creating a hair and beauty image
- health and safety
- salon reception duties
- shampooing and conditioning
- plaiting and twisting
- the art of colouring hair
- styling men’s hair.
You will also study English and maths as part of a full-time study programme.
You will need to undergo an initial assessment, but there are no specific entry requirements for this course. You must be keen and willing to learn, and you will receive lots of support and guidance during your time at the College.
You will be assessed by written assessments, assignments and tests.
On successful completion you may progress to level 2 hairdressing or beauty therapy courses at the College or even an Apprenticeship.
Fees quoted apply to courses starting in the academic year 2022/23 (August 2022 – July 2023). There may be a slight increase in fees for courses starting 2023/24.
If you are aged 16-18, due to Government funding, tuition fees may not be applicable for your course. (Please note: this does not apply to Foundation Degrees or Access to Higher Education courses, and other courses not eligible for public funding.)
