About the course

There are two distinctly different job roles within this occupational profile: hairdresser and barber. In these roles, you will be able to shampoo and condition hair, cut hair using a range of techniques, style and finish hair to create variety of looks, and colour and lighten hair for ladies and men. You will be able to shampoo and condition hair, cut hair using barbering techniques, style and finish hair, cut facial hair into shape and provide shaving services for men. Whether you become a hairdresser or a barber, you must be able to work with all hair types ranging from straight hair to very curly, wiry hair.

What you'll learn

On this course you will learn to:

  • shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
  • cut hair using a range of techniques to create a variety of looks
  • style and finish hair using a range of techniques to create a variety of looks
  • colour and lighten hair using a range of techniques
  • perm hair
  • perform hair relaxing treatments and techniques
  • provide hair extension services
  • cut hair using barbering techniques to create a variety of looks
  • style and finish men’s hair
  • cut facial hair into shape.
Entry requirements

Acceptance on this Apprenticeship will be determined through completion of Functional Skills entry assessments with our Work-based Learning team and a vocational assessment carried out by the hair and beauty team at the College. Usually, progression onto the advanced Apprenticeship is on completition of an intermediate qualification.

Assessments/Exams

Assessment will be through a combination of direct observation of performance, written assignments, unit test papers and online tests.

What's next?

On successful completion, you may wish to continue your studies by moving onto a higher level Apprenticeship or course. You could also benefit from greatly enhanced job opportunities, whether with your current employer or elsewhere.

Fees quoted apply to courses starting in the academic year 2018/19 (August 2018 – July 2019). There may be a slight increase in fees for courses starting 2019/20.
