About the course

The hair and beauty industry offers plenty of fun employment opportunities and is perfect for creative individuals who also love meeting and talking with a variety of people from all walks of life.

This course will give you the perfect start to a career in hair and beauty by providing you with a general introduction to the sector and an understanding of the range of services and treatments on offer.

Thanks to practical, hand-on training, you will learn many of the basic skills needed to progress in this industry and improve some of the techniques and talents you might have already picked up in your own time. In addition to lots of practical training, you will be able to improve your IT skills if necessary, with access to Google Suite that will have loads of helpful resources.

Please note that the College will provide all tools and equipment to be used on site and there is no requirement to purchase any kit or uniform.

What you'll learn

Carefully structured into three units, this course will cover the following:

  • introduction to the sector – this unit will allow you to gain a general introduction to the sector and to further you knowledge of the different treatments and services offered in hair and beauty setting, and to become familiar with the variety of different salons and beauty businesses along with the customers they look to serve
  •  presenting a professional image in a salon – this unit will make sure you know what is expected of hair and beauty professionals, and will look at aspects such as how to present and maintain a professional image in a salon environment, and how to communicate and behave professionally in a salon environment
  • plaiting and twisting hair – throughout this unit you learn and practise the various different plaiting techniques using hair blocks or working with peers will help you perfect your practical skills. You will learn how to use a range of industry-standard products, tools and equipment, and you will learn various hair decoration methods, all whilst maintaining the highest standards of health and hygiene and behaving in a professional manner.

Assessments/Exams

Assessment will be via online assignments and practical tasks.

What's next?

Successful completion of this course could lead to the Level 1 Certificate in Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector. This will involve completing two more practical units to complete in our salons with an additional two assignments.

Important information

Fees quoted apply to courses starting in the academic year 2020/21 (August 2020 – July 2021). There may be a slight increase in fees for courses starting 2021/22.

If you are aged 16-18, due to Government funding, tuition fees may not be applicable for your course. (Please note: this does not apply to Foundation Degrees or Access to Higher Education courses, and other courses not eligible for public funding.)
