About the course

Would you like to get to know more about the engineering sector, upskill your current knowledge, get some skills to help you with your hobby or start your journey into a new career in the engineering sector? Then this is the course for you.

You will learn practical skills that will help you to start a career in engineering or it might just give you the extra skills you need to take your hobby to the next level.

What you'll learn

This course is run over two evenings a week for 24 weeks. You will learn different skills that will help you within the engineering field you have an interest in.

Each course could cover either of the following pathways:

Machining Pathway

  • Working in engineering
  • Carrying out basic milling techniques
  • Carrying out basic turning techniques

Electrical Pathway

  • Working in engineering
  • Carrying out electronics assembly
  • Carrying out electrical assembly
Entry requirements

There are no specific entry requirements for this course.


You will be required to complete the following assessments:

  • one online multiple-choice assessment for the mandatory unit
  • one assignment for each chosen optional unit which contains practical and knowledge tasks.
What's next?

This course is a platform for progression onto other level 2 qualifications in engineering for example, the Level 2 Diploma in Engineering (full-time course) at the College.

On successful completion of the course you may progress into employment within the engineering/manufacturing sector in job roles such as:

  • machine operator
  • machine setter
  • electronics assembly operative.
Important information

Fees quoted apply to courses starting in the academic year 2021/22 (August 2021 – July 2022). There may be a slight increase in fees for courses starting 2022/23.

If you are aged 16-18, due to Government funding, tuition fees may not be applicable for your course. (Please note: this does not apply to Foundation Degrees or Access to Higher Education courses, and other courses not eligible for public funding.)
