What's it all about?

Are you looking for a City & Guilds course in vehicle maintenance and repair? City College Plymouth offers this nationally-recognised vocational qualification that demonstrates, to a national standard, competency in the maintenance and repair of vehicles. It is practically-based and skills are assessed in the workplace across a range of tasks. You are completing a technical automotive retail VCQ. It recognises the competence, skills, knowledge and understanding you require when working in the automotive retail sector. This IMIAL approved training also provides you with the opportunity to gain a qualification in the workplace that relates to your role and promotes good working practice.

Course information

You will be required to demonstrate all of the evidence requirements, learning outcomes, assessment criteria through workplace evidence. Level 3 reflects the ability to select and use relevant knowledge, ideas, skills and procedures to complete well-defined tasks and address straightforward problems. It includes taking responsibility for completing tasks and procedures and exercising autonomy and judgement within limited parameters. It also reflects awareness of different perspectives or approaches within an area of study or work.In order to demonstrate your competence, you will be assessed by providing evidence for your VCQ (which are based on National Occupational Standards).

Entry requirements are assessed on an individual basis. Selection criteria for entry will take into account your existing academic/vocational qualifications and experience, and interest in working in the retail automotive industry. Although not mandatory, it is recommended that you have three GCSEs in maths, English and a science-based subject. Applicants must be in employment in a garage.

The knowledge component of this qualification is independently assessed via online testing. The tests are mapped to each knowledge unit’s learning outcomes and assessment criteria to ensure coverage. These tests are marked electronically by City and Guilds.

On successful completion you may progress to:

  • another level 3 engineering course at the College
  • an advanced Apprenticeship in light vehicle repair
  • employment in the industry as, for example, a trainee technician.
