About the course

Would you like to work as a therapist in a spa, on a cruise ship or at a 5* hotel? Prepare yourself for a career in the beauty, complementary and wellness industry with this Diploma in Massage Therapy at City College Plymouth. This qualification specialises in massage treatments and techniques including: body massage, aroma massage, Indian head massage and stone therapy. The course will equip you with a range of specialist skills and knowledge required for working in the body therapies sector. You will learn to execute highly desirable therapies, study theories and gain underpinning knowledge and learn how to implement business practices. By expanding and improving your communication skills and knowledge of health and wellbeing alongside health and safety practices, you will become a well-rounded industry professional.

What you'll learn

This qualification covers a very wide range of skills and knowledge required for working in the body therapies sector, including:

  • body massage
  • massage using pre-blend aromatherapy oils
  • Indian head massage
  • stone therapy massage
  • wellbeing and nutrition
  • history of complementary, alternative and allopathic medicine
  • anatomy, physiology and pathologies
  • health and safety and client care and communication skills.
Entry requirements

In order to be successful on this level of course you will need one of the following:

  • four to five GCSEs at grades 9-4 (A*-C) – including English and maths
  • a BTEC first diploma in a related subject
  • a Level 2 Certificate in Beauty Therapy or equivalent prior knowledge of the beauty therapy industry
  • a level 2 anatomy and physiology qualification
  • successful completion of an Apprenticeship programme, equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience.

There are externally set and moderated theory exams, along with internally marked practical exams. You will also be required to complete a portfolio of work, including some assignments.

What's next?

On successful completion of this course, you will benefit from enhanced employment opportunities in the beauty or complimentary therapies sector. You may also wish to use your new skills to start your own freelance business. You will also have the skills to expand your learning by completing the Level 3 Diploma in Reflexology or the Level 3 Diploma in Aromatherapy at the College.

Fees quoted apply to courses starting in the academic year 2020/21 (August 2020 – July 2021). There may be a slight increase in fees for courses starting 2021/22.

If you are aged 16-18, due to Government funding, tuition fees may not be applicable for your course. (Please note: this does not apply to Foundation Degrees or Access to Higher Education courses, and other courses not eligible for public funding.)
