About the course

During this course you will be introduced to the basic aspects of Adobe Photoshop from project-setup to the main tool list and layers. You will produce a series of edited, creative, image-manipulated pieces of art with themes of realism, abstract, typography fantasy and observational digital painting.

What you'll learn

Week 1
Looking at examples of Photoshop painting. The interface of Adobe Photoshop: project setup, tools, layers, and basic editing effects/filters and techniques. Editing a basic photograph.

Week 2
Fantasy environment: using basic image manipulation techniques in Adobe Photoshop you will follow a demonstration on creating a scene using different layers and photographs of your set theme to recreate a fantasy scene.

Week 3
Masking in Adobe Photoshop: quick mask and layer masks. Image manipulation, hue saturation, lasso selection.

Week 4
Basics of using a digital graphics tablet. Digital painting.

Week 5
Using digital drawing techniques, to create a still life from observation

Week 6
Image manipulation techniques incorporating the use of digital drawing, scanned materials and an introduction of basic brushes to produce an abstract piece of portrait art.

Week 7
Typography manipulation in Photoshop.

Week 8
Designing an advertisement poster.

Week 9
Open session to develop a skill and piece of art that inspires you within Adobe Photoshop.

Week 10
Open session to develop a skill and piece of art that inspires you within Adobe Photoshop.

Please note, the above course content should be viewed as a guide. The lecturer may choose to alter content according to student needs.

Entry requirements

There are no specific entry requirements, however you will need a pen, note book and 2 GB memory stick for each session. All other materials and equipment are provided.



There are no exams.

What's next?

Upon successful completion, you may progress to the level 2 course in Photoshop Painting for Media.

Important information

Fees quoted apply to courses starting in the academic year 2020/21 (August 2020 – July 2021). There may be a slight increase in fees for courses starting 2021/22.

If you are aged 16-18, due to Government funding, tuition fees may not be applicable for your course. (Please note: this does not apply to Foundation Degrees or Access to Higher Education courses, and other courses not eligible for public funding.)
