About the course

Do you want a job as a top chef in a prestigious hotel or renowned restaurant? Are you looking for a chef training course or catering course? This level 3 City & Guilds Professional Chefs course at City College Plymouth could be the best route for you if your chef ambitions lie in working for AA rosette winning eateries or Michelin starred restaurants. Supported and endorsed by the Craft Guild of Chefs (the UK’s largest chef organisation) this level 3 chef training course will equip you for the rigours of the modern-day restaurant and hotel environment. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to work at external events all around Plymouth; last year’s highlights included MTV Crashes Plymouth and Flavour Fest. If you have a real interest in cooking and food and beverages, and wish to train professionally for a career, then this study programme will give you the skills that top employers are looking for.

What you'll learn

The main subjects taught include:

  • introduction to catering and hospitality industry
  • basic food production and cooking
  • serving food
  • food safety
  • preparing and serving dishes
  • introduction to healthy eating.

Your individualised study programme will be made up of the following four areas:

  • the qualification you are studying
  • English and maths
  • work experience
  • other activities to develop your personal skills e.g. preparing you for employment, training or higher/further education.
Entry requirements

You will need to have four GCSEs of which at least two should be at grades 9-4 (A*-C), including English and maths. You must show a willingness to engage and a genuine interest in the course that enables you to progress into employment or further education. Work experience within the hospitality sector would be viewed favourably.

Assessments/Exams

Assessment throughout the course is continuous in every subject. You are not only assessed on written work but also in practical situations, on your appearance, attitude and teamwork, and technical skills.

What's next?

On successful completion of this course you may progress to the Hospitality and Tourism Management Foundation Degree at the College or employment in the industry.

Fees quoted apply to courses starting in the academic year 2018/19 (August 2018 – July 2019). There may be a slight increase in fees for courses starting 2019/20.
