About the course

Science isn’t just about the big, life-changing discoveries: it’s about the thousands of people working in jobs that are seeking to somehow improve the lives of others. 

Science offers a route to a variety of highly skilled and well-paid jobs, and this T Level will provide you with the knowledge, skills and behaviours you need to succeed. 

As part of this qualification, you will choose between one of two occupational specialisms:

  • laboratory sciences
  • food sciences.

T Levels are a brand-new qualification designed to give you a head start towards the future you want. They follow GCSEs and are equivalent to three A Levels.

This two-year T Level qualification brings classroom and work placement together on a course designed with employers and businesses.

You’ll spend 80% of your time in the classroom and 20% on a 45-day placement to give you the skills and knowledge employers are looking for.

Your T Level will help you to step straight into your chosen career, an Apprenticeship or a degree.

What you'll learn

You will develop a general understanding of health and science, including:

  • working within the science sector
  • health, safety and environmental regulations
  • managing information and data
  • principles of good scientific and clinical practice
  • core science concepts including the structure of cells, tissues and large molecules, genetics, microbiology and immunology.

You will choose between two occupational specialisms: laboratory sciences and food sciences.

By choosing the laboratory sciences pathway, you will study:

  • planning and performing a range of appropriate scientific techniques
  • collecting evidence and data
  • communicating scientific information
  • use of specified instrumentation and laboratory equipment, including calibration where required.

By choosing the food and healthcare science pathway, you will study:

  • nutrition
  • food microbiology 
  • food engineering
  • testing consumer products.
Entry requirements

In our experience, to be successful on this level of programme you will need an appropriate functional level in English and maths to be able to fulfil the coursework requirements. We welcome applications from those who have one or more of the following:

  • five GCSEs at grades 9-4 (A*-C) (must include English, maths and science)
  • a BTEC Level 2 certificate or equivalent graded merit or above in a related subject
  • successful completion of an Apprenticeship programme.

You must have gained a minimum of a grade 4 in GCSE English and maths before starting this course.


Assessment will be through written and practical examinations, employer projects, group work, presentations and analysis.

What's next?

On successful completion of the T Level you may progress to:

  • the HNC/D in Applied Biology at the College
  • university-level study in a related subject at institutions throughout the UK
  • an Apprenticeship
  • employment in a variety of jobs, laboratory assistant, dietician, food inspector, food safety co-ordinator.

Fees quoted apply to courses starting in the academic year 2021/22 (August 2021 – July 2022). There may be a slight increase in fees for courses starting 2022/23.

If you are aged 16-18, due to Government funding, tuition fees may not be applicable for your course. (Please note: this does not apply to Foundation Degrees or Access to Higher Education courses, and other courses not eligible for public funding.)
