About the course

Are you looking for a part-time childcare course or child development training? This short course in childcare combines one day a week at the College and one day of voluntary work experience in a childcare setting. The course takes eight weeks to complete and is suitable for 16-18 year olds as well as adult learners. The programme will provide you with an introduction to some of the key principles needed to support young children’s holistic development, care and education, and give you an awareness of the skills needed to work in nurseries, pre-schools and other childcare or early years settings.

What you'll learn

The following is a short summary of some of the topics which can be studied on this course:

  • what is childhood?
  • what is development?
  • health and safety
  • observing children’s behaviour
  • how to communicate effectively with children
  • planning activities for children
Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements. However, an interview will be required and progression is reliant upon meeting entry criteria for specific programmes which can lead to employment.

There will be a variety of assessments, including practical work, reports, and question and answer sessions.

What's next?

Upon successful completion you may progress onto an Apprenticeship in childcare, or a full-time childcare qualification subject to interview, a clear DBS check and appropriate English and maths qualifications.
