About the course

Do you have a passion for sport? An interest in staying fit and healthy? Have you thought about a career as a Sports Therapist, Strength and Conditioning Coach, Health and Fitness Instructor or a PE Teacher? This BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Sport at City College Plymouth could be the next step on your chosen career path! It’s designed as a full-time sports development course covering knowledge required for the sport sector and is equivalent to three A Levels. It focuses on fitness training and programming, sports leadership and coaching, fitness testing, practical sports performance and more. You’ll be offered the opportunity to gain practical experience within the sports, health, and fitness industry with 15 sport-related subjects studied over one to two years and a work experience placement, making this course an exciting opportunity and challenge for those wanting to make a career in the industry. This year, our sport students got to assist at the Plymouth 10K!

What you'll learn

The course includes the following subjects:

  • anatomy and physiology
  • fitness training and programming for sport, health and wellbeing
  • sports leadership
  • application of fitness testing
  • sports psychology
  • practical sports performance
  • coaching for sports performance
  • sports events organisation
  • exercise and circuit-based physical activity
  • work experience
  • coaching and leadership for participation

Your individualised study programme will be made up of the following four areas:

  • the qualification you are studying
  • English and maths
  • work experience
  • other activities to develop your personal skills e.g. preparing you for employment, training or higher/further education
Entry requirements

In our experience in order to be successful on this course you will need one of the following:

  • four GCSEs 9-4 (A*-C) grade including English and maths, preferably with physical education and science
  • BTEC first diploma at merit level, with a satisfactory reference regarding attendance, attitude and potential for development
  • successful completion of the BTEC level 3 subsidiary diploma in sport
  • an NVQ level 2/technical certificate
  • successful completion of an Apprenticeship course
  • equivalent qualifications or relevant work experience

Whilst the majority of the programme is coursework-based, there will be a written examination in anatomy and physiology.
