What's it all about?

There are approximately 41,000 people in the UK working in the super-fast and ever-changing motorsport industry and with this qualification, you could be in pole position to work alongside the likes of Lewis Hamilton and Dave Thorpe.

Formula 1 is often the first thing people think of when they hear the word “motorsport”, however, there are many opportunities for those who wish to work in the competitive branch of this £9billion industry, from F3 and rally car racing, to super bikes and Motocross. In addition to these roles there are some 4,500 companies in the UK linked to the development of performance vehicles, many of which are expanding to respond to the advancement in technology and a need to make the industry more sustainable.

The course will provide you with the essential knowledge and technical skills to carry out maintenance and servicing on all types of vehicles, but you will also start developing the specialist skills that will put you on track for a winning career in motorsport. You could also consider moving into other areas, such as the defence and aerospace industries, ensuring the road ahead is full of possibilities.

Course information

You will study the following units:

  • vehicle construction and routine maintenance
  • operating principles of vehicle engines, tyres, brakes, steering and suspension systems
  • operating principles and maintenance of vehicle transmission systems and electrical and electronic systems. 

You will also gain a broad knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace, and other skills associated with working on vehicles, and as a Google Reference College, you will also develop a variety of digital skills that will make your CV stand out.

This diploma is part of a full-time study programme which also includes:

  • English and maths
  • work experience
  • other activities to develop your personal skills e.g. preparing you for employment, training or higher/further education.

There are no specific entry requirements, however you must show a willingness to engage and a genuine interest in the course that will enable you to progress into employment or further education.

You will be assessed through a variety of practical tasks and assessments, and exams.

On successful completion you may progress to a Level 2 course in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair at the College, an Apprenticeship in the sector, or employment in the industry.
