What's it all about?

Are you a mechanic with no formal qualifications, or would you like to train for a job as a mechanic or vehicle repair technician? The level 3 City & Guilds Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair at City College Plymouth could be the right choice for you.

This course is aimed at building on the level 2 and introducing you to the more complex systems of today. Your training will cover the operation and diagnosis of vehicle systems including the engine, chassis, electrics and transmission. You’ll undertake research projects which enable you to become more autonomous and able to work on your own initiative with support and guidance coming from the tutor.

It’s a fast-moving course with attendees covering the same amount of content as our full-time students but spending just one day a week on campus, which is why considerable experience working with cars is required for entry.

Course information

This advanced course will build on your previous knowledge, skills and qualifications to introduce you to more complex maintenance and repair systems. You will complete research projects and tasks covering operation and diagnosis of systems which will allow you to improve your problem-solving skills and prove you can work on your own initiative.

The course content will include:

  • knowledge of diagnosis and rectification of light vehicle engine faults
  • skills in diagnosing and rectifying light vehicle engine faults
  • knowledge of diagnosis and rectification of light vehicle chassis system faults
  • skills in diagnosing and rectifying light vehicle chassis system faults
  • knowledge of diagnosis and rectification of light vehicle transmission and driveline faults
  • knowledge of how to identify and agree motor vehicle customer service
  • skills to identify and agree motor vehicle customer service needs
  • knowledge of diagnosis and rectification of vehicle auxiliary electrical faults
  • skills in diagnosing and rectifying vehicle auxiliary electrical faults.

In our experience, to be successful on this course you must have considerable experience of the auto industry and have previously completed a level 2 or equivalent qualification.

Those who do not hold a relevant qualification but have significant industry experience are still encouraged to apply and will be invited to share their level of skill at interview.

You will be assessed through a variety of practical tasks and assessments, in addition to several online and paper exams.
