Would you like to be a joiner and learn how to create pieces such as doors, windows and stairs? Joinery is a skill and an art. It takes a lot of practice and patience to produce a high standard of work that can be used in today’s ever-growing construction industry. And with 10,000 construction jobs expected in Plymouth by 2020, those skills will be in demand! This Level 3 City and Guilds Bench Joinery course at City College Plymouth will ensure you’ll learn skills that can set you on your path to a career in the construction industry. You’ll be working with the latest technologies, using and setting up power tools.
You will study the following subjects:
- health and safety
- construction technology
- setting out joinery items
- marking out joinery items
- manufacturing joinery items
- use and maintain a circular saw.
Your individualised study programme will be made up of the following four areas:
- the qualification you are studying
- English and maths
- work experience
- other activities to develop your personal skills e.g. preparing you for employment, training or higher/further education.
In order to be successful on this course, you will need to have achieved a level 2 qualification in construction and have produced a drawing for an Institute of Carpenters piece of work. If possible, you will need to have made the piece, but this is not essential.
Most of your assessment will be under simulated industry working conditions, in the workshops and classrooms. There is also one externally set exam.
On successful completion of the course, you may move on to a job in the construction industry.
