About the course

The aim of this preparation course is to help you develop the knowledge and skills you will require to join a level 2 full-time or part-time course, a Traineeship, an Apprenticeship. This course will help develop your employability skills and provide the opportunity to find out what trade area within building and construction you may wish to pursue a career in.

What you'll learn

This course will provide you with an overview of work in the construction trades. Areas covered may include:

  • communicating in the workplace
  • interview skills
  • equality and diversity in the workplace
  • teamwork skills
  • blocklaying principles
  • bricklaying skills
  • constructing a cavity wall using bricklaying skills
  • plastering techniques
  • prepare ceilings and walls for decoration
  • understanding the use of power tools
  • wallpapering skills.
Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.


A portfolio of evidence will be submitted for assessment and there are no formal examinations.

What's next?

On successful completion of this course, you may be able to progress to another construction course, Apprenticeship or Traineeship with City College. Alternatively, you may be able to gain employment.

Fees quoted apply to courses starting in the academic year 2018/19 (August 2018 – July 2019). There may be a slight increase in fees for courses starting 2019/20.
