Determination Rewarded at College Celebration

City College has once again honoured students who have shown great commitment to their studies and celebrated their impressive achievements.

One of the winners at the College’s Student of the Term Awards, Kimberley Devine, 16, received two accolades. Kimberley received Care Student of the Term and the Governors’ Award for her dedication to her studies despite a rough start to the year. After a big move from Torpoint to Okehampton, Kimberley continued to make the two-hour commute to the College. Shortly after her move Kimberley’s boyfriend was involved in a very serious motorcycle accident and was reliant on her to care for him. She managed to juggle hospital visits travelling to Derriford every day, while keeping on top of her studies.

Teresa Gardner, Director of Business, Hospitality, Care and Science at the College, said: “Kimberley has faced many challenges this year but has shown great personal strength and determination as well as a clear commitment to her learning. Struggling to get to College, having to care for family members as well as juggle her College work has tested Kimberley, but she has remained self-motivated and organised. Her determination and positivity knows no bounds and we couldn’t be more proud of what she has achieved. She is very deserving of both awards.”

“I’m so happy to have won a Student of the Term Award,” said Kimberley. “To also be recognised by the College Governors as an outstanding student is very humbling. This year has already had a few bumps in the road but my education is very important to me and it’s great to be awarded for my commitment.”

The Student of the Term event was held in PL1, the College’s well established restaurant, with a special menu prepared and served by hospitality and catering students. The awards evening was attended by each of the Student of the Term winners and their families, their nominating lecturers, College staff and Governors.
