As the City gears up for its next big foodie event – next month’s Seafood Festival – students at City College have been looking back at their recent success at Flavour Fest. Now in its thirteenth year, Flavour Fest once again spoiled the foodies of Plymouth with a feast of delicious delights.

City College was keen to be at the heart of this event which brings in 100,000 people to our seaside city. Students from the College ran a stand, giving young people studying hospitality and catering the opportunity to sell their culinary creations alongside more than a hundred professional food producers.

The College’s stall offered hot drinks, cakes and quiches that the students had prepared themselves and a select few also had the chance to assist Chef Lecturer Richard Farleigh with his cooking demonstration on the big stage. It was a great occasion for students to show what they can do and to promote the College restaurant PL1.

Chloe Lillicrap, 18, from Tavistock, who is studying for her level 2 hospitality and catering qualification, said: “Flavour Fest allowed me to gain vital experience. I enjoyed working with everyone and talking with the public. People know what they like, so you gain a better understanding of how to please your consumer.”

Flavour Fest is a celebration of local produce and chefs, a perfect platform for the future workforce in the catering industry. Getting real world experience and being immersed in the market is something the College promotes as invaluable for students’ employability skills.

Alex Gibson, 21, from Mount Wise, who is in his final year of his studies at the College also commented: “I have learnt new skills, like communication, marketing, and money handling. Flavour Fest has allowed me to show off our College to the community and build on its good name.”

The College was an official sponsor of this year’s event and hope to repeat the success of their stall in the future.
