Get the College Experience

This half term City College is inviting year 11’s to try the ‘college experience’.

Young people will have the opportunity to take part in a series of free course taster sessions encouraging them to try something new, and offering them a look at different post-16 options.

Open to students aged 15-16 the sessions will give them the chance to get hands-on with some of the subjects on offer at the College. They can try their hand at cooking in the College’s industry-standard kitchens; take flight and learn cabin crew skills in a mock air cabin; handcraft their own metal structures in the state-of-the-art engineering centre; create a computer game with the help of the games development team; or undertake mini hair and beauty treatments in the College’s Stars Hair and Day Spa.

Local employers are also involved in the tasters, giving attendees the opportunity to hear directly from businesses about what it is really like to work in their chosen industry. These include Plymouth Albion, the New Continental Hotel, the Cellular Pathology team at the NHS Trust and Princess Yachts, as well as Nursery staff from Curious Kittens.

Jo Williams, the College’s Events Officer who organises the week of activities, said: “This is our fifth year running half term taster sessions and we’ve had some fantastic feedback. Not only are they great fun, but they also provide young people with an insight into the opportunities available at the College and help them discover the best route into their chosen career. We even throw in a free lunch!

“The support from local employers and ex-students also helps to show the students what careers they can have after they leave education. Our hope is that each session will enable young people to get a step closer to making the right choice for their future – that is really why we are here, to help young people gain the skills and attributes to enter the world of work.”

There are 16 sessions running Monday 24 October to Thursday 26 October 10.30am to 3.00pm. Spaces are limited and bookings close on Monday 16 October. Visit and book your place as soon as possible.

For anyone interested in the post-16 options available at the College, the Open Day is on Saturday 4 November from 10.00am to 1.00pm at the Kings Road campus. Call 01752 305300 or visit for more information.
