Advanced Learner Loan

The Advanced Learner Loan enables any student (aged 19 or over*) studying a level 3 (equivalent to A Level) or above further education course to apply for a Government loan to cover their course fees. See the Advanced Learner Loan page for more information and how to apply.

*If you’re aged 19-23 and studying for your first full level 3 qualification, then you may be entitled to a fee waiver so won’t be required to take out a loan.

Access to Learning Fund (ALF)

This hardship fund is available for higher education students on a low income who may need extra financial support to stay in higher education. It’s a grant, so you don’t need to pay it back. You can contact our Funding team for a copy of this application form.

Professional and Career Development Loan

The Professional and Career Development Loan is a deferred interest repayment loan from a bank to support your tuition and living costs. Eligible students (aged 18+) can borrow between £300 and £10,000 over two years. See the Professional and Career Development Loan page for more information and how to apply.

Residential Support Scheme (RSS)*

This can help students aged 16-18 to study a course that is not within a reasonable daily travelling distance from their home – see the Residential Support Scheme for further details.

* Eligibility criteria will apply.

16-18 Vulnerable Bursary*

This £1,200 bursary is paid in ten monthly instalments to 16-18 year olds in care, care leavers and those on Income Support/Universal Credit or both Employment Support Allowance AND Disability Living Allowance/Personal Independence Payment. The monthly payments will be linked to your attendance and can be used to support travel or compulsory course-related costs.

* Please note: Subject to eligibility criteria and conditions, means testing and linked to attendance.

We can help students with bus travel costs between the College, city centre and train station, as well as offering subsidised travel passes* across Devon and Cornwall.

Some 16-19 year olds and 19+ students can get help with childcare payments. These are linked to attendance and can be used for the College’s own nurseries and local childcare providers. For students under 20, this support is provided by the Government’s Care to Learn scheme. You can apply for support and find out more information on their website.

Free Bus Service

The College offers a number of free bus services, in partnership with Plymouth Stagecoach, for travel between the College and the city centre. They are available to all City College students when they show the driver a current student ID card. Students can travel free of charge on the number 36 service without their student ID card for the first four weeks of the academic year.
