We're outstanding

City College Plymouth is rated ‘good with outstanding features’ in the latest Ofsted report. Ofsted is part of the government body which checks the quality of teaching, learning and assessment, outcomes for learners and the effectiveness of leadership and management.

The report highlights the quality assurance procedures are robust. The inspectors praised that action plans for improvements are well considered and implemented showing the College continuously wants to improve. Learners stated that they feel very safe at the College. Importantly, it was recognised that the ‘teaching is effective, resulting in good outcomes for learners and good development of the skills and attitudes they require for employment.’

Her Majesty’s inspectors also found that learners have a good understanding of their potential, what teachers expect of them through the targets they set in their plans, and what they need to do to improve their work.

The Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework (TEF) is a national exercise, assessing excellence in teaching at universities and colleges and how well they ensure excellent outcomes for their students in terms of graduate-level employment or further study.

City College Plymouth has been awarded the highest rating of ‘Gold’ for delivering consistently outstanding teaching, learning and outcomes for its students.

In the College’s most recent survey 97% of the students said that they felt safe at City College Plymouth.

Our results and progression

International students at City College Plymouth receive great results with a pass rate of 97% with 45% achieving distinction, 44% merit and 11% achieving a pass grade.

We give you the best start for the future

Latest Government figures secure the College’s position as one of the region’s leading education and training providers. In a recent Government national ‘FE Choices Student Satisfaction Survey’, City College Plymouth students ranked their college first in the country for student satisfaction. 

Students at City College Plymouth achieve success where level 3 results achieved are 91.9% which is 6.9% above the national average.

We put a huge amount of energy into planning lessons, with small class sizes of 15 students and supporting our students to understand concepts, as evidenced by the recent award of FE lecturer of the Year to Brian Banks. His lessons were described as “extraordinary”, and his techniques and inventiveness as “legendary”. He has also helped to design systems and processes that are used across the College for tracking and target setting.

Modern facilities to help you succeed

City College Plymouth has great facilities to help students succeed on their course.  We have recently built a £13m STEM Centre and been certified a ‘Maths Centre for Excellence’. There are 2,000 computers, free student Wi-Fi, a theatre, gym, music room, a training fuselage and an extensive library and e-library. The College resources have been designed to support creative and innovative learning environments.

City College Plymouth has also recently celebrated multi-million-pound collaborative bid success for the new Institute of Technology where we will revolutionise digital, engineering and manufacturing technology education to establish a network of Institutes of Technology across the country. State-of-the art facilities will grow and develop higher education programmes at City College Plymouth such as the UK’s first Marine Autonomous Vehicle Foundation Degree. Courses like this will address the regional skills gaps and shortages and help stimulate growth in this world-leading sector, positioning Plymouth as one of the world’s centres of excellence for marine engineering and marine autonomy research, development and education.

As one of the region’s leading colleges in delivering world-class higher level digital and marine engineering skills, particularly in marine autonomous vehicles, the funding will enable City College Plymouth to further grow our employer-led provision, responding to local and regional skills gaps and shortages, forming a truly collaborative approach between higher education, further education and leading employers who are all focussed on ensuring this provides world class technical education enabling it to become one of the world’s leading regions for digital, engineering and manufacturing technologies.

City College Plymouth has also received considerable funding from the Construction Industry Training Board to develop and deliver a two-year immersive learning project in close collaboration with ‘Kier Living’ and ‘We Are The Moment’, partnering with Plymouth Construction Training Group and Building Plymouth. The project develops state-of-the-art training experiences to support the booming investment and 10,000 projected new jobs expected in construction in Plymouth over the next five years. The partnership will promote the implementation of new virtual reality (VR) technologies in both higher education and further education and in the construction sector, attracting and retaining talent to improve productivity and address skills gaps in this vital industry. We will pilot and deliver innovative immersive learning experiences, central to each of these experiences is the development of a VR environments. 

The Students’ Union at City College Plymouth is a dedicated space run by the student liaison team, for students, and includes comfortable and engaging environments. The whole area is open, light and accessible to all students and includes a chill out space with easy chairs, sofa bean bags and a 65″ ultra-high-definition TV; an intervention suite, created to provide a quiet area for students to talk or study; and a games zone which houses three pool tables, two table tennis tables, an Xbox and PlayStation 4. In addition, the area includes a stage to host ‘open mic nights’ and a new gym has been installed in the activities room which features spinning bikes, rowers, ski machine and weights as well as other equipment. A group of the College’s media students are currently working on developing wall graphics for the Students’ Union for the different zones, depicting sports, games, entertainment and chill out themes.

City College Plymouth has a number of working businesses at our Kings Road campus that are available for students to use, including a restaurant, a shop and a brasserie, Costa Coffee and two hair and beauty salons.

Indulge your interests with our enrichment programme

Our action-packed enrichment programme has something for everyone, whether you are interested in the Ten Tors Challenge and Duke of Edinburgh Award, learning sign language or developing your creative writing skills.

There are many opportunities at the College that students can take part in, including societies and clubs organised by the Students’ Union. It is a great place to get to know new people and learn about British culture. It is also a great opportunity for you to practice and improve your English language.

The International team arranges lots of events and activities such as celebrations for Chinese New Year, organising activities around Plymouth and the South West area such as surfing and Segway tours, as well as arranging walking tours of Plymouth and the historic Barbican.

When students first arrive at City College Plymouth a thorough orientation ensures they learn all about their study programme, the College and local surroundings.

Premier International Year One graduates to progress to one of our five partner university year two courses for undergraduate study, in Business or Engineering

Foundation Degree (higher education): from business to game design, hospitality to marine engineering, over 20 majors to choose from. The Degree will be awarded by our partners – University of Plymouth or Plymouth Marjon University – please look through the course page to see further information or our programme progression routes. Students can join the College from year one (level 4) or year two (level 5) from our overseas partner institutions after one to two years of study at their home country.

Vocational Education Training: whatever your passion, we have 100s of courses available to choose from. Level 1 to level 3, from days to years, either join our existing course or customised according to your demand. 

Various short programmes, from weeks to months customised themed summer camp (STEM, physics, discovery, sport, etc), dementia care, to academic undergraduate/vocational study and exchange.

City College Plymouth is currently preparing to take student applications for our Premier International year 1 programme for engineering to start in 2021.

English language support

Improving English language skills is embedded into international learning at City College Plymouth. Previous years’ students confirm how much their English language skills improved during their time at the College. International based courses include English for Academic Purposes lessons which helps students improve their written and verbal skill set and prepares them for IELTs.
