Inspirational Student Awarded Twice at College Celebration

24 July 2017 | Hair & Beauty

Natalie Jones, aged 39, from Glenholt, won both the Hair and Beauty Student of the Year and Student Voice Award at City College’s annual awards, for her incredibly positive approach to College life in spite of difficult personal circumstances.

Natalie has been caring for a terminally ill child and home schooling her six other children all while studying for a qualification in hairdressing. She has always had a strong desire to train as a hairstylist but with her family commitments Natalie found it difficult to even consider returning to education. Last year she finally decided to apply to the College and begin the journey to her dream career.

Mark Trewin, Director of Creative, Cultural and Digital Industries at the College, presented Natalie with the Student of the Year Award. He said: “Natalie’s strength and attitude towards life and her studies is truly awe inspiring. Her ambition and commitment while tackling a difficult home life is testament to her determination to succeed, and a love for what she does – it is a genuine delight to recognise her hard work with a Student of the Year Award.”

Six additional special awards – sponsored by local organisations – were presented for: Community (The Herald); Employability (Plymouth Citybus); Enterprise (University of Plymouth); Equality and Diversity (Livewell Southwest); Opportunity (Plymouth Marjon University); and Student Voice (Radio Plymouth).

Neil Walker who presented Natalie with the Student Voice Award, said: “Natalie is very supportive and encourages her peers if they have any difficulties or problems. She is a shoulder to lean on and will lend an ear to anyone who may need it. Her positive ‘can do’ attitude is a great example to others and this Student Voice Award celebrates her contribution to her course and the College as a whole.”

Natalie said: “I was deeply humbled and moved when I was told I had won a Student of the Year Award but then to find out I had received an extra award was just the icing on top of an already great cake. I am so happy to finally be doing what I love and to be recognised for this is a bit unbelievable!”
