Music Students Donate £100 to Plymouth’s Homeless

In recognition of their excellent attendance record, a group of City College Plymouth music students were recently awarded £100 in Sports Direct vouchers, which they have generously donated to Plymouth’s homeless community through local charity Shekinah.

On Friday 14 June, Soo Brizell, Head of Strategic Partnerships and Contracts at Shekinah, visited the College to meet with the students and receive their donation.

One of the students, Phoenix St Jean, said: “The vouchers were awarded to everyone in our class because we had the best attendance record in our Academy [of Media, Digital Industries and Performing Arts] at the College, and we came to a group decision that we wanted to donate the money to charity.”

Clint Jones, Programme Lead for Creative Media Production at the College, suggested the students consider donating to a charity that works with the homeless as the Sports Direct vouchers would be particularly useful for this community. Clint said: “Shekinah seemed like the best choice, not only because they are right on our doorstep, but also because of the significant work they do across the city.”

Upon receiving the donation from the students, Shekinah representative Soo said: “First of all, thank you for your generosity and kindness – we really appreciate it! As a charity that works with people who are homeless, and with the number of homeless growing considerably year on year, a donation like this is really special. We are hugely grateful for donations of used clothing, from time to time somebody requires a new item so it’s really nice for the people we work with to have something new. This sort of donation enables us to buy, for example, a new pair of trainers for someone whose shoes have rotted in the rain because they’ve been sleeping rough, or buy them a nice warm fleecy jumper. This donation is hugely beneficial to the people we work with and I’d like to add that it’s really lovely that you, as a group of young people, are supporting Shekinah. This is really quite special, so thank you very much.”

Looking to the future, the students, who are currently studying towards the Level 3 Diploma in Music Performance and Production at the College, hope to continue their support for Shekinah. They suggested a fundraising student gig at the College might be possible; Soo thought this was a brilliant idea and said: “An event that brings together your talents for the greater good of a community that is often forgotten could be really amazing!”

Shekinah is a Devon and Cornwall based charity that provides opportunities for people in recovery or seeking recovery. This may include recovery from homelessness, drug and alcohol issues, offending behaviours or mental ill health.
