National Careers Week a Roaring Success

From chasing stories to chasing jaguars, Dartmoor Zoo’s Ben Mee came to City College Plymouth to talk to students about his change in career path and the truth about buying a zoo.

After being excluded from school, Ben was unsure where to turn but after a few years working in construction, he went on to gain his qualifications. Ben’s career path has had many twists and turns, but armed with a background in DIY and a passion for animal intelligence he decided to buy a zoo.

Ben went from Guardian journalist to zoo owner and his inspiring speech spoke of the unpredictability of the everyday, overcoming hurdles and tackling each new challenge as it comes. With sound advice on choosing the right career path, it was a great start to National Careers Week.

Careers Week, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, is dedicated to giving young people an insight into their future options. As well as mini careers fairs, the College invited employers to speak to students about their industries and the opportunities available within the City. Alongside Ben Mee, Lyons Davidson Solicitors, Astra Recruitment, Talem Recruitment, Devon Chamber of Commerce and Plymouth Community Homes gave talks and held question sessions.

“The College believes in giving students access to good quality impartial advice and guidance on careers,” said Mike Jones Employability and Engagement Manager. “We have many strong links with businesses dedicated to shaping our curriculum to ensure that the skills our students develop are the ones needed by local companies. Hearing directly from employers working in a range of industries gives students first-hand knowledge of the options available to them and the different career opportunities. Training the next work force to meet specific needs is so important to prevent young talent leaving this City in search of other opportunities.”

For more information on all of the study programmes available including full-time, part-time and Apprenticeships, the College is holding an Open Day on Saturday 29 April, 10.00am to 1.00pm, at Kings Road. For more information go to or call 01752 305300.
