New Partnership Brings Mallorca Work Experience Opportunities for Students
City College Plymouth students are to benefit from a new partnership with a sports training facility in Mallorca.
Foundation Degree students on the Strength and Conditioning course will be able to tap into work experience and internship opportunities at Block HQ on the Mediterranean island. Former City College student, Dayle Hallam, co-founded the company along with partners Villa Columbus (who provide lodgings and catering) and ReiseOptimo Tour Operators (who manage bookings and logistics). Together they run intensive boot camp-style holidays in a custom-designed facility that focuses on enhancing an individual’s fitness capacity.
Customers range from elite athletes preparing for an event, to those who just enjoy working out with like-minded people. Whether the goal is to improve fitness or to lose weight, Block HQ combines fully qualified coaches with state-of-the-art-equipment.
Ian Davis, Programme Manager for Strength, Conditioning and Sports Coaching at City College, travelled to Mallorca to see how Dayle and his team could enhance the students’ learning.
“The partnership with Block HQ is a fantastic opportunity for our students to broaden their horizons in the strength and conditioning workplace,” said Ian. “In Mallorca they will not only experience a different culture, but the international aspect will also give them a broader scope of industry practice.
“As well as coaching experience, they will be able to see first-hand what makes a business run. They will get the chance to work with real customers, helping to run sessions and prepare diet plans. The experience will enhance both their technical knowledge and their employability skills.”
Block HQ boss, Dayle, studied the Strength and Conditioning Foundation Degree at City College from 2011 to 2013.
“In my time I have seen too many bad coaches,” said Dayle. “I was really keen to get involved with City College because I want to pass on and share my knowledge, from both a coaching and business point-of-view.
“The strength and conditioning course at City College was my starting point and my stepping stone to what I am doing now. It helped to shape me and this partnership is a great way for me to give something back. I am very much looking forward to welcoming the students to Block HQ.”
The student placements are being funded by Erasmus+, the European Union programme for education, training, youth and sport. It runs for seven years, from 2014 to 2020, with organisations invited to apply for funding each year to undertake creative and worthwhile activities.
Erasmus+ aims to modernise education, training and youth work across Europe. It is open to education, training, youth and sport organisations across all sectors of lifelong learning, including school education, further and higher education, adult education and the youth sector. It offers exciting opportunities for UK participants to then study, work, volunteer, teach and train abroad in Europe.
For anyone interested in a career in strength and conditioning, and for details on all full-time courses and study options including those that start in January 2017, the College is running Course Information Drop-ins on Wednesday 23 November and Wednesday 7 December 4.30pm – 6.30pm.
