National title winner - Philip Orme

City College painting and decorating apprentice, Philip Orme, 23, from Barne Barton, has beaten the best in the country to take the Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year title.

Philip claimed his place in the national final after winning one of the regional heats that took place across the UK earlier this year. The final of the prestigious competition took place at the annual National Painting and Decorating Show, held at Ricoh Arena in Coventry.

Philip was up against seven other students in the race for the national title. Each finalist had to paint a wall panel, door and framework, and apply stencils, all while abiding by technical specifications.

“Philip is a real asset to the College,” said Painting and Decorating Lecturer at City College, Syd Dart. “His hard-working attitude and love for what he does are inspirational and we consider him to be a great ambassador for our trade. Previously earning second place at last year’s regional heat, Philip is fully deserving of the national title this time round.

“This competition offers young people a fantastic opportunity to showcase their skills on a national stage and help further their careers. The standard shown by the competitors is proof that the industry is in safe hands and we couldn’t be prouder of Philip, who has proven himself in front of many professional painters.”
Philip said: “I am absolutely delighted to have been named Johnstone’s Young Painter of the Year. Taking part in these competitions is really exciting and helps me to develop my skills. Being up against other painters who all excel in the field, in front of some of the best in the business, makes you want to push yourself. I’d encourage all young painters and decorators to take part in the competition.”

Philip won a £500 voucher for the College and a selection of painting and decorating supplies worth up to £2,000.
