Stonehouse Primary Schools Building Future at Construction Careers Day

07 June 2017 | Construction & the Building Trades

Primary schools pupils from Stonehouse will once again get the chance to take part in the Construction Careers Day at City College. The day looks to encourage young people to think about the different career opportunities available in this growing industry.

The event, now its third year is co-ordinated in partnership with Millfields Inspired alongside their Widening Horizons programme. The initiative gives groups of year five students the chance to get out of the classroom and into workplace settings, exploring various industries operating in the City. These experiences motivate young people to think about the different options that await them in the world of work.

Josanne Stewart, Development Manager for Millfields Inspired, has been leading the project. She said: “The Widening Horizons programme is a fantastic way to raise the aspirations of young people by linking the school curriculum with the world of work. The children that have attended previous events at City College have had a fantastic time, as they were able to get really hands on with the construction activities and do it for real. We know that this year’s event will be just as successful!”

Sam Selby, Youth Liaison Assistant at City College, said: “We’re looking forward to welcoming back Millfields Inspired and the Stonehouse schools for our Construction Careers Day. The students will be visiting our Construction Centre and taking part in a range of interactive workshops during the day, including bricklaying and plumbing. They will also be challenged to think about the careers and qualifications required for roles in these areas when they tour our construction site and workshops. We are hoping that the children will get a lot out of the day and gain good insight in to the multiple career options available in construction.”

Those interested in studying construction, or any of the full or part-time options available including Apprenticeships, the College is holding a Drop-in event on Wednesday 14 June, 4.30pm – 6.30pm at Kings Road. Please visit or call 01752 305300 for more information.
