Student Voice Wins Double at College Awards
A young man with a passion for travel and tourism who has dedicated himself to giving fellow students a voice has been recognised at City College’s Student of the Year Awards.
Kieran Brewer, 19, from Eggbuckland, took home the Travel and Tourism Student of the Year and special Student Voice Award, sponsored by Radio Plymouth.
The award was given to Kieran for his role as a student representative, giving advice, support and a voice to his peers.
The Student Voice Award was presented by Radio Plymouth broadcaster Martin Mills, who said: “Kieran is a hard-working individual who has risen to, and overcome, challenges in his life and deserves to be recognised. When selecting a winner for the Student Voice Award, we wanted to acknowledge the extra responsibilities he has taken on as a Student Rep – being a speaker for his fellow students and a shoulder to lean on.”
Ben Manning, Vice Principal of Curriculum and Quality, presented Kieran with his Student of the Year Award in recognition of his commitment to his studies. He said: “Kieran’s success can be attributed to his enthusiasm and incredible work ethic. Throughout the year, he has produced exceptional work and has continued to grow both socially and academically, despite his initial concerns about overcoming his disabilities. I am delighted to recognise his efforts with the Student of the Year Award for Travel and Tourism.”
Kieran said: “When I first started college, I didn’t think I would find myself here! Winning one award was incredible, so when they gave me the second I couldn’t believe it. I don’t think I’ve done anything very special, just worked hard and tried to help out others – but it is nice to have that acknowledged.”
He was presented with the award at the annual ceremony, which publically recognises and rewards students who have made a positive impact on their course, to the College or the local community.
In total 16 awards were presented to the students by the course directors, and a further six special awards – sponsored by local organisations – were then presented for Opportunity, (the University of St Mark and St John (Marjons); Enterprise, (Plymouth University); Employability, (Plymouth CityBus); Community, (The Herald); Equality and Diversity, (Livewell Southwest); and Student Voice, (Radio Plymouth).
Held in PL1 – the College’s reputable restaurant – a special menu was prepared and catered by current Hospitality and Catering students for those invited. The awards evening was enthusiastically attended by each of the Student of the Year winners and their guests, nominating tutors, College staff and Governors, and representatives from the six sponsoring organisations.
City College Plymouth would like to thank all award sponsors and also those employers who have supported students on courses at the College.
