Students to Experience Running a Hotel

27 July 2017 | College News, Hospitality & Catering

A first for the South West, City College is teaming up with The Duke of Cornwall Hotel to provide a fantastic opportunity for its hospitality and catering students.

Students joining the College in September will be given the chance to work in the City’s first luxury hotel. The Duke of Cornwall will be taken over by team members from the College’s PL1 Restaurant for a week in January, with the students helping to carry out the day-to-day running of the hotel, alongside their course lecturers and the Hotel’s management team. The students will get the chance to showcase and put into practice the skills they have been taught at the College.

Chaz Talbot, Academy Manager for Hospitality and Care at the College, said: “This is a unique opportunity for our students to gain an insight into the hotel industry and provide some valuable real life work experience. Students will get to familiarise themselves with all areas of the hotel including running a number of events, which will give them something to shout about when they are looking to gain employment in the industry.”

Over 100 students from the College will get to experience all aspects of hotel life, including front of house, food and beverage service and even housekeeping. The week plans to be a packed one, full of activities with three functions taking place, including a Burn’s Night Celebration on Thursday 25 January.

Jon Morcom, Director of The Duke of Cornwall has a strong relationship with City College as a former hospitality student and member of the College’s employer advisory board. He said: “We are really looking forward to welcoming the PL1 team to the Duke. As a former student I am always happy to be able to give something back to the place where I started my career. Working with local training providers to give people of all ages relevant work experience is something I strongly support, and this partnership will hopefully give these students a taste of what they may be doing in the future.”

For anyone interested in being a part of this exciting activity, there are still places available on hospitality and catering courses starting in September. For more information, College staff will be available in the City Centre Piazza between 10.00am and 5.00pm on Friday 25 August. Alternatively, visit or call 01752 305300.
