Students Get Down to Business on European Trip

Local students bid ‘auf wiedersehen’ to Germany and ‘hallo’ to impressive employability skills as part of a European student exchange programme.

The City College Plymouth business students spent a fortnight at Germany’s leading energy company, MVV Energie, in Mannheim. As part of an Erasmus+ funded project, the students gained valuable work experience and a unique insight into life as an employee of a large, multi-national company.

Throughout the two-week trip, the students lived and worked at MVV HQ and engaged in an exciting mix of hands-on project work, presentations, language training and sightseeing, with their German counterparts.

Poppy Carroll, 20, who is studying business at the College, said: “This was an incredible experience for me – not only did I develop my skills set, but I made new friends and discovered a whole new culture.

“Working alongside the German students at MVV was so fun!  We got on very well and were able to help each other improve our language skills. I have actually taken up learning German at home. I’m hoping this will open up many more opportunities worldwide and make me more employable.”

Hilke Henningsen-Hills, Associate Lecturer of Business at City College, who travelled to Mannheim with the group, commented: “This is the College’s fifth year of participating in the Erasmus+ programme, and it has once again been a resounding success. Everyone at MVV made the students feel really welcome and they have all come away with skills that will really boost their employability in the UK.

“We have also found out that our 2018-2020 Erasmus+ funding application has been successful in securing a further three trips to MVV for business and engineering students, which is fantastic news allowing even more students to benefit from this project.”

Those interested in pursuing a career in business or finding out more about the travel opportunities on offer are invited to attend the College’s Course Information Drop-in event on Wednesday 16 May, 4.30pm to 6.30pm at Kings Road. Visit or call 01752 305300 for more information.
