Students wow diners at special Rick Stein takeover event

On Thursday 4 November, City College hospitality and catering students had the opportunity to work with some of the leading chefs at Rick Stein Restaurants. 

Stephane Delourme, Group Chef at The Seafood Restaurant in Padstow, oversaw the preparations for a special takeover event at the College’s PL1 Restaurant, where visitors were treated to a delicious five-course menu.

College staff were among those taking up the offer to enjoy a seafood banquet for just £30, and local MP Luke Pollard also booked in for the event. 

Lecturer Maureen Alderson who was one of the lucky ones to book a seat at this event said: “It was an amazing experience – the food was exceptional with fab service! Well done to the students and staff.”

MP Luke Pollard tweeted: “A fantastic evening at PL1 at @cityplym for the Rick Stein takeover. Incredible food superbly cooked by the students. It’s usually open Wednesday and Thursday evenings so pop along and support the next generation of chefs for our city.”

For the students, it was a super opportunity to work with a leading name in the hospitality industry whilst developing their seafood skills: something they all really appreciated and has given them a huge boost with regards to their own career aspirations. 

One student, Jack Orr, was ecstatic to be offered future work experience with the Rick Stein team. Jack said: “I have been invited to do work experience at the Rick Stein Seafood Restaurant … I cannot wait.”

The Rick Stein team was also very impressed with the talents and attitudes displayed by the students. After the event, Mr Delourme said: “Inspiring to see such enthusiasm and passion from both students and lecturers at City College Plymouth.”

The College is looking forward to future collaboration events with the Rick Stein team.
