Ellie Hallett

City College Plymouth is where a career in childcare began for Ellie when she enrolled on the Diploma in Child Care and Education course. After completing her GCSEs, Ellie realised school wasn’t for her and decided to see what City College had to offer.

She said: “I didn’t want to do A levels, and I knew the childcare route was something that I wanted to go down, as it’s something I have been always been very passionate about. I saw the advert for the open day at the College and decided to go along and see what courses were available.”

Ellie attended the open day, which gave her the opportunity to speak to some of the lecturers about the course and also to get an idea of College life from current students. She said: “The information I received at the event was invaluable. It gave me the opportunity to ask as many questions as I liked. I had some really good advice so I decided to enrol on the course.”

Ellie found the transition from school to College really easy and soon settled in. She said: “I loved coming to College, and it’s something that I still miss today. I made lots of friends who I am still in contact with. The lecturers were so helpful and really were there for you if you were struggling in any way – they were great!”

Ellie completed the diploma and was so happy with what she’d achieved she decided to enrol on the level 3 extended diploma at the College. She said: “I felt that I’d really achieved a lot, and I had this urge to learn more, so I continued with my studies.

“We had the opportunity to do work experience, which really added to my skills base and even resulted in a couple of part-time roles in between my College courses.”
Ellie completed her level 3 extended diploma in July 2014 and managed to secure her current part-time position at Curious Kittens.

“I was really shy when I started College, but I believe that being at the College really boosted my confidence, both in my personal life and now in my work life. I would really recommend this course for anyone interested in childcare. The course gave me an insight into working with children that I believe really helped to get me where I am now.”
