Iris Schmidbauer

International cliff diving champion Iris was always interested in pursuing a career in sports medicine and joined City College to combine studying with her professional sports training as an International Cliff Diving Champion.

“Standing on the top of a cliff is terrifying – but if you know what you’re doing and you train for it, you enjoy it. People say ‘oh it’s so dangerous’ but I say that I’m trained how to dive from that height. You need to have trust in yourself and trust in physics – I know the risk, but I know how to do it right.

“I’m really enjoying the course and the diving specific one-to-one training I get with the strength and conditioning coaches. I think classes like anatomy and injury prevention really help me when I am diving too. I have a better understanding of how my body works and, if I get injured, I know what’s wrong and how to fix it.”

Iris is the 2015 International Cliff Diving champion and is hoping to complete her degree either at the University of Plymouth or following City College’s newly developed BSc Sports Rehabilitation, Conditioning and Therapy Honours Degree.
