Michael Bethell had gained a level three Extended Diploma in Public Services from a college in Essex before he enrolled at City College in 2013 to study the Foundation Degree in Public Services.
Michael said: “The course was exactly what I wanted to do and that, coupled with the fact that Plymouth is by the sea, was particularly attractive. Also, the College class sizes are smaller than you’d get at university, allowing the tutor more time to spend with you.”
City College is affiliated with the University of Plymouth and many of the Foundation Degree students go on to complete their third year there.
Michael continued: “With the course being linked to the University, it has given me ample opportunity to get out and meet people. Being a long way from home can initially be a daunting experience, but I feel I have become more confident since attending this course.”
Michael would like to join the British Army as an Officer and is training through the College’s links with the University Officer Training Corps, based in Exeter. Michael added: “I gain the same training as the other Officer Cadets at the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst. The fact that I am also part of the College has been a massive bonus for me.”
