Changing careers is easier said than done. With bills to pay and mouths to feed, throwing in the towel isn’t generally an option. However, in the spirit of Take a Chance day, why not take a leap and start down a new path?
Whether you are looking to upskill or retrain, Foundations Degrees are well-suited to people wanting to learn a new trade or move up the ranks. Available to study full or part-time – to fit around existing work commitments or other personal circumstances – this qualification is perfect for those wishing to re-enter education with ease. Foundation Degrees are a qualification in their own right and offer the opportunity to progress further with a top-up year to obtain a full-honours degree.
We spoke to Dean Avery who decided not to go down the traditional educational route, but instead returned to his studies after several years of being in the workforce in order to improve his career prospects.
“Having been away from a learning environment for so long it was nice to go back as an older student and go into a field I knew I had an interest in,” said Dean “As I grew older, I realised the importance of a good education and thought City College’s Foundation Degree in Marine Engineering would be a good place to start.
“The College environment was completely different to school. People around you wanted to learn and I felt there was more of a variety of teaching methods, with the course catering to all learning types. The lectures had good knowledge of the industry and were accessible wherever and whenever you needed them.“I have now gone on to university to complete my final year and gain an Honours Degree in Mechanical Design and Manufacture. I am set to graduate next year with a First Class degree.
On Saturday 28 April, anyone looking to discover a new career path can join young people looking for a different experience from school, those looking to improve their English and maths skills, and adults wanting to climb the ladder, at the College’s Open Day.
The event showcases the College’s wide range of career-focused courses. Staff will be on hand to offer advice on Apprenticeships, full-time study programmes, part-time adult education, access to higher education, and university-level qualifications. Visitors are able to view the industry-standard facilities and join in with practical demonstrations across the College, as well as take in music and dance performances.
Student Ambassadors will be on hand to talk about their experience of College life, as well as over 20 local employers from a mix of sectors who will be giving an insight into their industry, including: Purple Motion, Sherford Consortium, and the Armed Forces.
