Take a Bite out of College Life
During half term, young people from across Plymouth and the surrounding area will have the opportunity to take part in a series of course taster sessions at City College Plymouth. The free sessions will enable them to try something new and get a taste for college life.
The sessions are open to all students aged 15 – 16, who will have the chance to get hands-on with some of the subjects on offer at the College. The young students can try their hand at cooking in the College’s industry-standard kitchens; take flight and learn cabin crew skills in a mock air cabin; handcraft their own metal structures in the state-of-the-art engineering centre; create a computer game with the help of the games development team; or undertake mini hair and beauty treatments in the College’s Stars Hair and Day Spa.
Local employers are also involved in the tasters, giving attendees the opportunity to hear directly from businesses about what it is really like to work in their chosen industry. These include: Kier Construction; the Radiotherapy and Pathology Lab from Derriford Hospital; Kitley House Hotel; as well as the College’s own PL1 events team and Nursery staff from Curious Kittens.
Sam Selby, the Events Officer who organises the week of activities at the College, said: “The course taster sessions offer young people the opportunity to come into the College and get a feel for what it’s like to study professional and technical subjects.
“The support from local employers and ex-students also helps to contextualise the subjects they learn in the College and see what careers they can have after they leave education – that is really why we are here, to help young people gain the skills and attributes to enter the world of work.
“Our hope is that each session will enable young people to get a step closer to making the right choice for their future.”
There are 18 sessions running Monday 24 October 2016 – Thursday 27 October 10.30am – 3.00pm. Spaces are limited and bookings close on Friday 14 October.
