Turning Your Dream Career into a Reality
Starting down a new career path is incredibly scary no matter what age you are and whilst there is no ‘right way’ to discover a passion, life is too short to wait, so why not try something new?
One person proving this to be true is 62-year-old Susan Kane. After several successful careers in different sectors, Susan enrolled on the Body and Spa Therapy course at City College Plymouth. She now owns her own salon ‘The Beauty Box’ and fits work around her studies.
“City College has a good reputation, especially for producing outstanding students in the beauty sector, and I wanted to be part of that. I have always been interested in a career in this industry and thought, better now than never.
“The course is great as I can take what I am learning in the classroom and put it into practice in my business. Studying part-time gives me the flexibility to work in the salon and find time to complete my college work. I’m really enjoying learning a new skill amongst like-minded people.
“I obtained my BA(Hons) degree at the age 47, so I’m doing everything a bit later in life. However, it’s never too late to start something new or learn a new skill. I’ve still got lots to learn and lots to give.”
On Saturday 28 April, those looking to discover something new can find out about getting back to work, changing careers or taking up university-level study can find our more at City College’s Open Day. Visitors are able to take the grand tour and join in with practical demonstrations across the College, as well as enjoy live music and dance performances.
Student Ambassadors will be on hand to talk about their experiences of College life, and local employers from a mix of sectors will be giving an insight into their industry and the career opportunities within it, including: Barbican Theatre, Bell Group, MSubs, Plymouth Albion, and Sherford Consortium.
