Duties:

The Apprentice welder and fabricator will be expected to help with the construction of automated manufacturing systems. This includes:

  • Measuring & cutting metal into required lengths and shapes
  • Drilling and tapping holes where necessary
  • Producing metal components in a lathe and mill
  • Welding and grinding system guarding, robot bases and other fabrications
  • Painting and finishing robot bases and fabrications
  • Reconditioning of industrial robots including cleaning, repainting and lubricating

There is a highly complex range of welding skills: the different arc welding processes require different levels of manual dexterity, knowledge and skill to avoid making defective welds. There are a wide range of metallic materials that can be welded, each with different properties and behaviours.

You will be gaining both the practical and knowledge skills required to achieve this Apprenticeship Standard through your day-to-day duties at Swift Steel and through your one day per week College attendance.

Desired skills

  • We’re looking for someone with some basic trade skills in the area of welding and fabrication
  • You must also have good written and verbal communication skills and have the ability to work as part of a team

  • Proactive approach to work

Desired qualifications

  • Ideally, candidates will have a minimum of GCSE grade C/4 or above (or equivalent) in maths and English

Future prospects

  • We would be looking to progress an apprentice into a full-time employee, and there are further opportunities to develop professional skills throughout that employment

You will work from our industrial unit. Steel Fabrication is a dirty and sometimes noisy environment. You will be provided with required PPE.
