Duties:

As an Engineering Apprentice, you will acquire engineering skills to the highest level following an established Apprenticeship Programme in order to become qualified to join the site Production Engineering team as a fully-fledged Multi-Skilled Technician on shift.  You will contribute to achieving the goals of the factory by efficiently carrying out any assigned operation or task, applying and using your acquired engineering skills to the highest level.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Provide an innovative proactive engineering service based on skill, experience and continuous improvement across all areas of production and other areas when required
  • Learn problem-solving techniques to solve problems by considering all options, evaluating potential solutions and implementing actions
  • Plan and organise daily tasks, projects and assignments, ensuring engineering work is carried out within time constraints
  • Complete stores requisitions for parts required and contract services
  • Once trained to do so, carry out risk assessments on plant and be actively involved in plant improvement groups
  • Continually monitor plant conditions and report/repair defects under supervision
  • Effectively collaborate with team members and operationally based colleagues to enable the team to operate effectively

Training:

  • Engineering Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard

  • Once trained to do so, carry out risk assessments on plant and be actively involved in plant improvement groups
  • Take on new tasks and procedures within the work environment and complete work and assignments to agreed timelines

For this 42-month apprenticeship, you will attend City College Plymouth full-time for the first year, then one day a week for years 2,3 and 4, alongside working at Premier Foods.

  • The ability to undertake a number of manual tasks in various positions, such as confined spaces, working at heights and lifting tools and equipment

  • Willingness to work shifts, including days, nights and weekends
  • Be available for regular meetings with NVQ assessors or on-site colleagues and verifier

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrate a positive “can-do” attitude with the ability to follow instructions
  • Enjoy working as part of team and other apprentice / students, feeding back assignment and work progress

Desired qualifications

  • 4 GCSE’s grade C / 4 or above including maths, English and science

Prospects:

There may be the potential for permanent employment or progression to a higher-level apprenticeship for the right candidate, upon successful completion of the apprenticeship.
