A powerful new international partnership has been formed between City College Plymouth, Teledyne Marine, and MSubs to strengthen skills development in defence, engineering and marine autonomy, directly supporting the ambitions of the UK Defence Industrial Strategy.
The collaboration brings together two global employers and the city’s learning destination of choice to create new pathways into high-value careers, supporting both regional economic growth and national defence capability.
City College Plymouth, recognised as a leading provider of technical and professional education, plays a central role as the anchor institution for skills development. Through its state-of-the-art facilities at Oceansgate, the College delivers Foundation Degrees in Marine Autonomous Vehicles, providing students and apprentices with cutting-edge knowledge and practical experience aligned to industry needs.
MSubs, a long-standing partner of the College, has consistently recruited graduates from these programmes. Many of these graduates have gone on to secure roles within the company and progress to higher-level study, including PhD research, demonstrating the strength of the skills pipeline being developed in Plymouth.
Teledyne Marine, a global leader in advanced engineering and marine technology, is now working alongside MSubs, manufacturers and developers of cutting edge internationally used submersibles, and City College Plymouth to deliver new Apprenticeships focused on engineering and marine autonomy. These Apprenticeships will provide students with invaluable hands-on experience while equipping them with the technical skills required to contribute to next-generation defence and autonomous systems.
This collaboration represents a significant opportunity for students to gain direct access to high-value careers, while supporting innovation and capability within a strategically important sector.
To help prospective apprentices explore these opportunities, City College Plymouth is hosting an Apprenticeships Open Evening on Wednesday 22 April from 4.00pm to 6.00pm, where MSubs will be in attendance to speak directly with applicants about careers in marine autonomy and engineering, and the exciting pathways available through this partnership.
Jackie Grubb, Chief Executive of City College Plymouth, said: “This partnership is a fantastic example of how education and industry can come together to deliver real impact. At City College Plymouth, we are proud to be at the forefront of skills development in marine autonomy and engineering. Working alongside Teledyne and MSubs allows us to offer our students exceptional opportunities to gain experience, progress into high-value careers, and contribute to the UK’s defence capability. We’re delighted to welcome prospective apprentices to our Open Evening to discover more about these exciting opportunities.”
Brian Maguire, EVP, Marine Vehicles GM, Marine COO, Teledyne, commented: “Teledyne is committed to supporting the development of advanced engineering skills that are critical to both innovation and national security. The opening of our new Plymouth facility, alongside our collaboration with City College Plymouth and MSubs, ensures we can help develop the next generation of engineers who will drive forward marine autonomy and defence technologies.”
Brett A Phaneuf, President, Submergence Group LLC, MSubs, added: “Our partnership with City College Plymouth has been invaluable in building a strong pipeline of talent. The apprentices and graduates we recruit bring fresh thinking and strong technical foundations. Together with Teledyne, we are creating outstanding opportunities for people to enter and progress in a rapidly evolving and strategically important sector. We look forward to meeting prospective apprentices at the upcoming Open Evening.”
