What's it all about?

Ever watched a video and thought, I could make something like that? This is your chance to find out how!

On this practical course, you will plan a story, shoot a short film, create an animation or produce an advert. You will explore how digital media is made, try out different creative roles and turn your ideas into finished work.

If you are aged 16 to 18 and currently out of education, employment or training, you do not need experience or formal qualifications to get started. You do not need to know exactly where you want to go, either. This course gives you room to explore what interests you and build confidence as you go.

Course information

Digital media starts with an idea, but bringing that idea to life takes more than pressing record. You will learn how to research a topic, plan your work, develop a concept and work with others to make it happen.

Units

You will complete the following four mandatory units:

  • being organised
  • developing a personal progression plan
  • working with others
  • researching a topic.

You will also complete six of these units:

  • creating a storyboard
  • designing an interactive presentation
  • producing an advert
  • layout design for a digital product
  • creating an animation
  • shooting a short film
  • making an audio recording
  • editing and sharing a media product

Each project is a chance to try something new. You might discover that you love being behind the camera, bringing images to life through animation or piecing together the final edit.

You do not need any formal qualifications. What matters is an interest in digital media and a willingness to take part.

If you have not yet achieved a grade 4 or above in GCSE English or Maths, we will discuss the English and maths study that forms part of your programme.

You will complete coursework and assignments throughout the course. These give you opportunities to show your ideas, creative work and the skills you develop along the way.

By the end of the course, you will have explored different areas of digital media, developed practical skills and gained a clearer sense of what you would like to do next.

You could progress to further study in media, games development or art at City College Plymouth. Your lecturers will help you explore the options that suit your interests and ambitions.

Please note fees are quoted for one year only.
