Victoria Pomery took up the role of CEO of The Box in Plymouth in October 2021. The Box opened in autumn 2020 following a very significant capital investment. The Box is a hybrid cultural organisation part museum, gallery, and archive.
The Box is an Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation and is supported by Plymouth City Council. The Box is developing a significant reputation and has partnerships in place with organisations nationally and internationally. The Box is committed to becoming an anti-racist organisation and given its context and the history of Plymouth, the current focus is on Empire and the Climate Crisis.
Victoria started her career at the Mead Gallery part of Warwick Arts Centre at the University of Warwick. During her time there, she was seconded to Tate St Ives and to the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery at the University of Western Australia. She subsequently ran Angel Row Gallery in Nottingham before moving to Tate Liverpool as Senior Curator. In 2002, she was appointed as the founding Director of Turner Contemporary to establish an arts organisation in Margate. Victoria worked alongside David Chipperfield Architects on the design of the building and was instrumental in raising the funds for the capital project. Working closely with John Kampfner, the first Chair of Turner Contemporary and a board of trustees, Victoria ran Turner Contemporary for ten highly successful years since it’s opening in April 2011. During Victoria’s tenure, Turner Contemporary featured on the twenty-pound note and hosted the Turner Prize exhibition in autumn 2019.
Victoria was awarded an OBE for services to the arts in 2012, an Honorary MA from the University of the Creative Arts in 2013 and an Honorary Doctorate from Canterbury Christ Church University in 2020.
