Caitlin Wilmshurst, an 18 year-old aspiring mental health practitioner, retook her GCSE Maths qualification at City College Plymouth in November after not achieving in secondary school, and was delighted to gain the result she needed to pursue her aspirations.
Reflecting on her experience at the College, Caitlin said: “I feel amazing. I feel relieved, like all this hard work has paid off. My favourite part of retaking maths was absolutely my lecturers, because I had never liked my teachers at school.”
Asked about her advice to anyone considering taking a GCSE at City College Plymouth, Caitlin added: “Do it. It’s worth it. There are really good lecturers here. And that’s coming from someone who did not enjoy school. After studying at the College, I feel like a completely different person!”
Caitilin now intends to undertake a Level 3 in Health, Social Care and Social Work at the College, and from there to progress into an Apprenticeship. Her journey illustrates the power of perseverance and determination, and demonstrates how a fresh perspective and a second chance can transform educational prospects and outcomes.
